Fadua El Ackhaoui: writer, director and creative producer of ZINA

Starring Judith Noyons.

This razor-sharp feel-good drama series is about five girlfriends and their insatiable drive to become who they want to be and is set between Moroccan culture and Dutch polder reality. This feel-good series shows a new story which is touching, funny and cheeky and in which everyone can recognize themselves.
In the first season, we are introduced to Amal (Soumaya Ahouaoui) and her friends Lamya (Asma El Mouden), Sofia (Jouman Fattal), Nisrine (Dunya Khayame) and sister Samira (Sofia Yousfi). Amal is a Moroccan-Dutch woman who has her life on track. She has a job, a house and is about to marry Younes, type of ideal son-in-law. That very fact makes her question all the expectations imposed on her by others and by herself. She has almost checked off all the boxes on her list. But is she happy?
At the beginning of season 2, the five girlfriends leave for Morocco, which is a turning point in their lives for all of them. When Lamya meets her half-sister at her father’s funeral, it unravels a big family secret about her mentally ill mother. Can Lamya care for her family without losing herself? And like Lamya, her friends struggle (each in their own way) with choosing for themselves and also caring for the community they come from.

The first series of Zina was shown by KRO-NCRV on NPO 3 and NPO Plus. This first series was nominated for a Rockie Award and shortlisted for the Rose d’Or and a Gouden Kalf.

The eight-part KRO-NCRV drama series is directed by Fadua El Akchaoui and conceived by creative producer Daria Bukvić and Fadua El Akchaoui (the makers of the successful theater production Melk & Dadels and the film Meskina), among others. The scenarios were written by Fadua El Akchaoui, Dunya Khayame, Manju Reijmer & Daria Bukvić.

Zina is produced by ROSE Stories, MediaLane and KRO-NCRV.
